Northfields just opened its doors to Year 5 (9 years old) and Year 6 (10 years old) pupils. This is the initial phase in development of a full preparatory school to facilitate the transition of students into the High School, both in terms of academic ability and social development. The Prep school has dedicated classrooms, and access to other specialist teaching facilities for a wide range of subjects. The curriculum is challenging and varied with the aim of engaging our pupils to develop a desire to learn and inquire. The academic curriculum includes English, Mathematics, Science, French, History, Geography, ICT, Art and Design, Music, Drama, Citizenship and Culture, Physical Education and PSHE.
We broadly follow the English National Curriculum but with small class sizes and specialist teaching the minimum requirements are exceeded with some topics being introduced earlier and topics covered in more depth. Pupils are taught in mixed ability classes throughout the school and subjects are managed by specialist Heads of Faculty who are committed to ensuring excellent standards and continuity of learning throughout the stages of education at Northfields.
Pupil progress is monitored closely by the Class Teacher and the Head of School, informal and formal tests will take place throughout the year. Teaching staff will liaise closely with the pastoral team, highlighting the strengths of individual children so that they have the opportunity to nurture and develop their skills and passions in particular areas.
As part of the holistic education that Northfields provides, our extra-curricular programme offers students the opportunities to develop their interests further. A variety of activities will be available to all students for example music, sports and further academic exploration.
